Nashville musician Matt Lovell has experienced both tragedy and kindness first hand after he was shot in an attempted car-jacking in the Five Points area on January 30, 2017. Walking into the Red Door Saloon East just minutes after the incident, he reportedly said, “I’ve just been shot,” before patrons and staff rushed to assist him. Fortunately, their fast action and the expert care provided by EMTs and Vanderbilt Hospital’s nursing and surgical staffs saved his life.
“The bullet was headed for my heart and ricocheted off of my sternum,” Lovell says. “Even after that, it continued to miss so many vital organs. It brushed against my lung but left no damage. It came within inches of my spinal cord. It damaged my liver but missed the most vascular part of it. I'm just so thankful and amazed that my life and quality of life were spared.”
As is the case with many musicians, Lovell was uninsured, and the Nashville music community has rallied to his assistance. On Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m., the Matt Lovell Gunshot Recovery Fund Concert will be held at the Basement East. The acts scheduled to appear include Brothers Osbourne, Lucie Silvas, Trent Dabbs, Leigh Nash, Laura Veltz, Emily West, Fancy, Kree Harrison, Matt Koziol, Colin Elmore, Diamond Carter, and Emma Hern. Dre Kennedy will host the event. Although Lovell is still recovering from his injuries, he plans to be at the concert to personally thank his supporters.
Donations to assist with Lovell’s medical expenses can be made to Matt Lovell’s Gunshot Recovery Fund.
